Ubuntu is major Linux distribution (wikipedia article)
One should select LTS version, as for example Help is full only for LTS versions and Node.js packages are supported for LTS but not latest versions.
Installing Java JDK 8
There are many Java implementations for Ubuntu. Let's stick with Oracle JDK:http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/install-oracle-java-8-in-ubuntu-via-ppa.html
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer
Check what exact version you got:java -version
javac -version
